About Waterbury
Waterbury is the fifth-largest city in Connecticut and the second-largest city in New Haven County.
Nicknamed the “Brass City,” Waterbury grew extensively between the early 19th century and the first half of the 20th century due to industrial interests. In particular, Waterbury became the national leader in the manufacture of brassware, which is reflected in the city’s nickname and motto Quid Aere Perennius? (What Is More Lasting Than Brass?). Waterbury also became known for its clockmaking and watchmaking industries, including the manufacture of a popular one-dollar pocket watch that sold over 500 million units from 1896 to the 1950s.
The city is home to several institutions of higher education. In addition to Post University, Waterbury is the site of the University of Connecticut at Waterbury, the University of Bridgeport at Waterbury, Western Connecticut State University, and Naugatuck Valley Community College.
