Authorities fighting distracted driving in Connecticut

Connecticut readers know that distracted driving is a serious issue that continues to impact drivers across the state. Despite safety awareness and other efforts, many drivers continue to use their cell phones while driving, knowing full well of the danger. Distracted driving in any form, particularly cell phone use, can lead to an increased chance of accidents.

If you suffered injuries in an accident caused by a distracted driver, you may not know that you have legal options available to you. Through a personal injury claim against the liable driver, you may be able to hold the driver accountable for his or her actions. Connecticut law enforcement is also making a serious effort to combat this type of dangerous driving and reduce the number of preventable accidents.

Fighting a serious problem

Distracted driving is a serious issue that does not appear to be going away any time soon. Most drivers are well aware of how distraction can affect their ability to drive safely, yet they still do things like eat, text, talk on the phone and other risky things while driving.

Police in various towns across the state are initiating a strong effort to fight this problem. They are going to increase law enforcement presence in certain areas, and they are warning drivers that using the phone while driving will result in a traffic stop. Consider the following about fighting distracted driving:

  • There will be extra patrols on the streets in August with the purpose of stopping distracted drivers.
  • Drivers caught texting while behind the wheel will get a ticket.
  • The first offense is $150, the second is $300 and subsequent distracted driving tickets are $500.

Distraction is a major concern for authorities across the country. Things such as using a GPS, talking to a passenger and even adjusting the radio can be distracting, but cell phone use is particularly dangerous.

Your rights as an accident victim

If you are a victim of an accident caused by a distracted driver, you have rights. Despite the efforts of law enforcement to fight dangerous and reckless driving, it is impossible to eliminate distraction completely. However, each driver is responsible for the decisions he or she makes behind the wheel, and that person is accountable for any damages from an accident.

It is beneficial for accident victims to take quick action to protect their rights and initiate the personal injury process as soon as possible. This can ensure the preservation of important evidence and may help you secure necessary financial support sooner.
